Visit the Coffin Works

The Coffin Works is a heritage attraction located on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter in Birmingham. Our grade II* listed factory and its contents tells the story of Newman Brothers, Birmingham's last coffin-furniture manufactory who operated from this Fleet Street premises for over 100 years.


Come along and explore the Coffin Works on either a guided tour or more at your own pace with self-guided entry.

All areas within the museum are accessible by platform lift. A British Sign Language Tour (with audio and sub-titles on iPad) is available at all times

Exhibitions


exhibition space Wonderful new exhibition based on images of 'House of Newman' stands at NAFD annual trade shows, where the Newman Brothers could display their latest coffin furniture designs to funeral directors. This exhibition allows us to display more of our core collection of coffin furniture, and also features a coffin bier donated by Castleton Historical Society.
Admission to the exhibition is included in the price of a guided tour.

See Newman Brothers Opening Times. Last entry 3.00pm. There is a charge for factory tours. (Entry to the museum is by guided tour only.)

Joining us for a tour? If you are early or fancy a cuppa after your tour we have a cosy 1960s-themed factory canteen! We’ve got our best Pyrex cups and saucers at the ready, magazines from the decade to flick through and a LW/MW period transistor radio to listen to. True nostalgia!
 In warm weather we also have tables and chairs in the Courtyard. We have hot and cold drinks for sale.

For Hire

The Coffin Works offer a characterful events space for hire in the heart of Birmingham, only a few minutes' walk from the train stations. Set in a grade II* listed factory built in 1894, it is a unique setting for team meetings, conferences, concerts, theatre performances, private and corporate parties.  We have a meeting room which seats 25-30 Theatre style, 15 Board Room style.

  • Wednesday is Community Day! Free admission for residents of Ladywood Ward with proof of residency / postcode (e.g. bank statement, utility bill).

Group Visits

  • Please pre-book on 0121 2334785 if you are visiting as a group. If you would like an exclusive tour, you will be asked to pay the equivalent of 15 tickets which is our capacity per tour.
    Groups are charged at £5 per person.
    Please be aware, members of the public may join your tour if your numbers are lower than 15. There is coach parking on the street opposite.

Out of Hours Evening and Daytime tours

  • Please get in touch if you would like to book a tour outside our usual opening hours. This might be on a Monday, Tuesday or in the evening. Min 10 people. Price £8 per person. 0121 233 4785.
